Pollutantion: Assessing Environmental Exposure and Health Risks

Date Published: 10/29/2007 [Source]

Children exposed to the same amount of pollution as an adult are much more susceptible to negative effects due to their smaller body size and faster respiration rate.

Pollutants released into the environment and to which a population is at risk of being exposed are chemical agents, biological agents (pollen, bacteria, and mold), physical agents (noise, light, vibration, force, stress, and temperature), and radioactive agents (radon gas, electromagnetic fields, and nuclear waste products).

Radon is inexpensive to test for and, should tests show unacceptable levels, to mitigate. More information on radon can be found at the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency website (http://www.epa.gov/radon) and state environmental protection offices.

Inexpensive consumer home test kits are available online at radon.com or by calling 1-800-AirChek.
