Free radon test kits identify common threat

The state health department offers free test kits to Colorado residents this month to assess the level of deadly radon gas in their homes. The gas, which is colorless, tasteless and odorless, is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the nation, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

"The geology of Colorado suggests there will be homes with elevated radon," Kenneth Wyrick, environmental testing specialist, said. "Most of the homes have never been tested." Montrose is one of a majority of counties throughout the state designated as "high radon potential" zones, according to the CDPHE. The risk of exposure increases during winter months.
