Existing and new homes should be tested for radon

You can't see it, you can't smell it, and you can't taste it, but radon may be present in your home. Radon is a naturally occurring, invisible, odorless, and tasteless gas that is dispersed in outdoor air and can reach harmful levels when trapped in buildings.

Radon is found in a majority of homes, as Iowa leads the nation for the highest percentage of homes with elevated indoor radon levels. The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) says approximately 72% of basements or levels in contact with soil have high radon.
