Radon was the fifth radioactive element discovered.
From the normal breakdown that occurs with radium following the processing and production of uranium, Radon is produced as a naturally occurring radioactive gas that continues to break down in a process that results in a dangerous cause of cancer and other health problems. Radon itself breaks down further and further and the process eventually can cause lung cancer. It is now acknowledged as a potent pollutant in our society causing a large proportion of lung cancer in the US.
As well as internally in the home, a major source of high levels of radon is in the soil surrounding houses. The gas from the soil enters the house - or building - penetrating through cracks in the floor, walls, drains, and other openings. It also enters through wells and plumbing systems to reach dangerous levels that can endanger lives. Radon checks should be regularly employed.
It is not possible to see it, smell it or detect it by the use of our human senses in spite of it being the heaviest known gas known, being about eight or nine times more dense than the air. It has ease in penetrating most of our common household materials, building materials, timber and insulation. This causes great concern when considering the quality of our domestic environments.
It is advisable to check radon levels in the living spaces of your home and there are kits designed for this purpose.
We are in danger of inhaling radon in quantities higher than acceptable to health. We can also ingest it through the water we drink. Some people have an immune system better than others. Because of these inherent differences, radon doesn't affect everyone in the same way or to the same extent.
Can we reduce radon levels if we detect them? We must seek for answers and get assistance from our environment protection agencies.
Aromatherapy or the science of Osmics is proving immensely popular when applied in self help or in professional healing. It is a delightful way to employ natural perfumes to assist mood and mind states and is particularly helpful as an adjunct to relaxation techniques and stress relief. Sally Wilson is an expert in aromatics and author of one of the earliest publications on the subject, directing its use in incense and in healing and has utilized the subtle benefits in her naturopathic practice over many years.
