Radon expert urges testing during National Radon Action Month

Due to Iowa's unique geology, Iowa has the highest average radon concentrations in the country, which is why R. William Field, professor of occupational and environmental health and epidemiology in the UI College of Public Health, has urged Iowans to test their homes.

Field has also testified before the President's Cancer Panel regarding environmental factors in cancer. He has concerns about the country's ever-increasing exposure to radon because builders choose to build new homes without radon resistant features. Equipping new construction with radon-preventative measures is faster than retro-fitting existing homes with high levels of radon.

Field recommends that all homes be tested because levels can vary from one home to the next and the only way to know is to test.

Discounted test kits are available from the Iowa Air Coalition.
